To most people, crystals and gemstones are just pretty stones to look at. But for those who practice spiritual healing and yoga, crystals are essential in facilitating the healing of one’s body, mind and spirituality. As crystals are derived from the earth, to say it contains Earth’s DNA is not merely a figure of speech. Formed from minerals, they possess unique atomic structures and vibrate at their own frequencies. Rooted in traditional practices that can be traced to Ancient Egypt, Hinduism and the New Age movement, healing crystals are popular as an alternative treatment. Though there is no scientific evidence to support the healing ability of crystals, some believe that crystals promote positive energy, and that they can be used to recalibrate imbalance in spiritual energy or chakras.
So how did crystals find their way into skin care? We all know good skin doesn’t just come from good skin care. Our overall physical and mental health plays a major contributing role too. If crystals can calm your mind and soothe your skin in one go, why not kill two birds with one stone?
Although there is a plethora of precious to semiprecious stones out there, I can only cover so much in one article! Here, I’ll explore the more commonly available crystals along with some products that are made of or contain essences from the corresponding stone.
The use of jade in beauty can be traced back to China’s Tang Dynasty, especially in the form of Gua Sha, a medical method that involves scraping or rubbing skin with a flat, rounded tool to promote blood flow while relaxing muscles to eliminate puffiness. When used on the face, the experience can be described as both a massage and a workout. It’s best not to directly use Gua Sha on dry skin; instead, use in conjunction with water or a face oil for optimal effect.
Jade is associated with wisdom, calm and status. To spiritual healers, jade possesses cleansing energy that rids skin of toxins. The stone itself is rather cold to the touch, giving it its cooling and calming properties. When you use a jade face roller in the morning, it can de-puff and revitalize your complexion. At night, it can help release tension in your facial muscles for optimal repair. Regular use also helps to prevent wrinkle formation and encourage firmer, smoother skin!
Like jade, rose quartz is considered great for stimulating better blood circulation, which is essential for banishing toxins from your skin while also boosting cell renewal and recovery. Using rose quartz regularly in your skin routine helps to restore a healthy glow by relieving tension that can lead to dull and sagging skin. Naturally cool on skin, when rose quartz is incorporated into skin care devices, it offers an instant cooling sensation that can soothe inflammation.
It’s believed that different types of crystals possess different kinds of healing effects. As rose quartz is a love stone, it corresponds to heart chakras and its unique vibration promotes peace, harmony and all forms of love including self-love.
This mystical purple gemstone is said to have the ability to purify negative energies (i.e., stress) while also promoting emotional clarity. Its presence is so calming that it has become popular décor even for non-practitioners. Healers hail amethyst for its general positive energy, which makes it an all-purpose stone. Some recommend placing an amethyst near the side of the bed to improve the quality of sleep, or on different parts of the body to regulate mood swings.
An amethyst face roller will also offer a cooling sensation to calm inflamed or irritated skin, which is a plus when used in conjunction with skin care products. For instance, using a face roller over a sheet mask not only improves the mask’s adherence, but also improves the delivery of nutrients to the skin and relieves tension from your facial muscles. The face roller upgrades the benefits of any skin care, as it can help oxygenate skin to encourage a healthier and firmer complexion, giving your regular sheet mask sesh a boost!
